Bring Joy to Parenting

By January 31, 2018General

Are you looking for a little boost and a lot of new ideas? How about completing your in-service training credit hours or CEUs? If so, you don’t want to miss this year’s annual Symposium.

Each year, Utah Foster Care brings together foster parents, child welfare professionals, and therapists from throughout Utah to hear nationally-acclaimed speakers and share knowledge the latest tips for parenting traumatized children.

“Not only do you get wonderful training that helps you with your adventures in parenting, but you get the chance to meet foster parents that have gone through similar experiences,” says Jill Baggiore, a foster mom in Northern Utah. “I almost wish it was a requirement to attend because you really do benefit from it!”

This year’s program on Thursday, April 19th at the Park City Doubletree/Yarrow Hotel features two speakers who will educate and inspire you, as you continue on this journey of foster parenting.

Shane Salter was born to a teen mom and grew up in foster care. He has served as Chief of Staff for Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.city government and founder and former CEO of CASA for Children of D.C. Shane will share his personal journey from abandonment to achievement and from pain to purpose.

Mona Delahooke, PhD., is a pediatric psychologist who uses a strength-based, family centered approach in her work with children and families.

“Joy is a powerful tool for solving childhood challenges,” says Dr. Delehooke. “The simple truth is that joy leads to healing and supports optimal development.”

“So how can you help children experience more joy? Whether you’re a parent, healthcare provider, or caregiver, it’s important to find moments of self-compassion and stillness for yourself.” Kirsten Wilcox, another foster parent, has attended the Symposium for the past four years.

“I wouldn’t miss it. The presenters are fabulous and to be able to go for $10 is an amazing opportunity,” says Kirsten. “In my role as a teacher, I’ve been to events that cost hundreds of dollars and I haven’t learned half as much as I learn at these symposiums. They have helped me in countless ways.”
