In-service Training

Staying at the Top of Your Game

In order to remain licensed, foster families need 16 hours of on-going education each year. We call this “in-service training” and it’s available from a variety of sources: Utah Foster Care (UFC) training staff, local peer support groups (Clusters), and from a handful of approved outside providers. In addition to in-service classes you may take in-person, we also offer a growing library of live and recorded online classes. Both in-person and online courses may count towards your 16-hour requirement.

Training hours not offered by Utah Foster Care must be pre-approved by your Resource Family Consultant.

Support Groups Support Groups

Skills Building with People You Know!

Peer support groups (what we used to call “Clusters”) host small-group training on a regular basis. A calendar of upcoming training events hosted by Utah Foster Care support groups is available in each Foster Roster (our bi-monthly magazine for foster/adoptive parents). Issues of the Foster Roster are mailed every other month to currently licensed foster parents and are also available for download.

Attending local support group gatherings on a regular basis is not only a great way to get the emotional and logistical support you need to succeed, it’s a great way to stay on top of the training you need to renew your license.

Online Classes

Sometimes 2 am is a Perfect Time…

Online classes are an easy way for licensed foster parents to get their in-service training hours. It’s as easy as watching a YouTube video (because that’s exactly what you’re doing).

Watch a Video…

Our professional trainers prepare and record classes for your viewing convenience. Viewing one of these hosted videos grants you the same credit hours as participating in a live session.

Get Class Credit…

Once you have watched one of the webinars listed above, please send an e-mail to your trainer (find them in the staff directory) stating the title of the video, the presenter, the date and time you listened, as well as three ideas you took away from the training that you intend to use with children in your home. This will guarantee that you will receive the appropriate credit for renewal hours for licensing.

Important: If you are watching a video as a couple, each of you must send an e-mail with the required information.

Other Providers

It Takes a Village!

The list below includes community organizations and seminars that offer classes that may be applied toward your in-service training requirement. While all of these organizations have approved training, not all of their courses are necessarily approved.

Please contact your Resource Family Consultant (RFC) for more information. RFCs are employees of the Utah Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS). Information on how to contact state employees is available in the Our Partners area of our Contact Us page.

Seminars

Of course, our own Annual Symposium—which addresses childhood trauma and attachment—counts towards required training hours.
