Circle of Security Parenting Program - Utah Foster Care

Circle of Security Parenting Program

Presented by Liz Rivera, COSP Facilitator

At times all parents feel lost or without a clue about what a child might need from us. Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you. The Circle of Security program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.

Learning Objectives of the Training:

  • Understand your child’s emotional world by learning to read the emotional needs
  • Support your child’s ability to successfully manage emotions
  • Enhance the development of your child’s self esteem
  • Honor your innate wisdom and desire for your child to be secure

Placing a child in foster care is a crisis for that child. The child’s crisis can disorganize any family environment; even experienced foster parents have stories to tell about that! There is evidence that foster parents who are able to psychologically commit to the children in their care promote security.

The reflective dialogue that is at the heart of the Circle of Security Parenting™ program helps the foster parent to build a coherent narrative and organize the disorganizing effects of foster placement. For many foster parents, participation in the COSP™ program also enhances their level of psychological commitment to the children in their care.
